The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has expanded the Food Safety Certification for Specialty Crops (FSCSC) program. Now, medium-sized businesses can participate alongside small businesses. Eligible specialty crop growers can apply for financial assistance to cover expenses related to obtaining or renewing a food safety certification. The program supports a portion of the specialty crop operation’s certification costs and related expenses.

To qualify, applicants must be a specialty crop operation, meet the definition of a small or medium-sized business, and have incurred eligible expenses related to certification. The program covers various costs, including developing a food safety plan, certification fees, microbiological testing, and training. Interested applicants have until January 31, 2025, to apply for assistance covering eligible expenses incurred in 2024.

The USDA, under the Biden-Harris administration, aims to transform America’s food system by promoting local and regional food production, fair markets, and access to safe, nutritious food while investing in rural infrastructure and clean energy capabilities.
