The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which the US, Canada, and Mexico signed in 1992 and went into effect on January 1st, 1994, established a free-trade zone in North America. NAFTA immediately eliminated tariffs on the vast majority of goods produced by the signatory countries. Additionally, it asks for the majority of the current obstacles to cross-border investment and the flow of goods and services between the three nations to be gradually removed over a 15-year period.
