Republicans are introducing a bill to alter eligibility requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, with Rep. Dusty Johnson leading the charge. The legislation, which enforces stricter work requirements for able-bodied adults without children, could spark a showdown with Democrats over the nation’s largest food assistance program.

Rep. Dusty Johnson’s Proposal

The America Works Act, proposed by Johnson, aims to reform work requirements for able-bodied adults receiving SNAP benefits, raising the maximum age from 49 to 65, reducing state waivers, and emphasizing work as the best pathway out of poverty.

Biden and House Democrats are pushing for Congress to eliminate food access barriers, including SNAP eligibility limits, to prevent food and economic inequities, and propose the Improving Access to Nutrition Act to eliminate this.
