Alabama Heirs Property Alliance (AHPA) Program
- Aimed at providing information and support to families dealing with heirs property.
- Unresolved heirs property issues can hinder government aid for farming, disaster relief, or home improvement grants.
- Issues can also lead to bank non-lending, high property costs, and difficulty in property decisions.
- Solutions include title clearing, tenant-in-common agreements, and family estate plans to prevent land loss and ensure future generations’ use.
Through programs at the Alabama Cooperative Extension System offices, Alabama’s three land-grant institutions are working together to help families deal with heirs property by giving them information and support. An organization called the Alabama Heirs Property Alliance (AHPA), made up of professionals from land-grant institutions, helps families understand their legal rights, make a family tree, deal with paperwork, and get in touch with heirs property lawyers across Alabama.
Heirs property issues that haven’t been settled can make it hard to get help from the government for things like farming, disaster relief, or home improvement grants. Or cause issues like banks not lending or approving a mortgage on the property, making property costs too high to pay, and making it hard to make choices about the property. Families are the ones who have to deal with these problems the most, since fights and disagreements can ruin relationships and make people angry for a long time.
It’s possible to clear the title, make a tenant-in-common agreement, or make a family estate plan as part of this. These steps can help keep the land from being lost, make sure that future generations can use it, and make it easier to keep up.
