Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the fight against wildfires by helping firefighters detect smoke. Pano AI, a company in California, has deployed their technology in six states, including California. The technology uses ultra high definition security cameras mounted on cell towers to rotate 360 degrees every minute to detect smoke.
Pano AI’s algorithm helps identify smoke early on and decipher it between clouds or dust, with the detection verified by a human before being passed on to first responders. This technology helps emergency managers coordinate and make smart decisions, reducing false alarms and wasting resources.
CAL Fire, for example, uses AI cameras in Riverside and San Bernardino County to detect abnormalities like smoke, providing instant situational awareness and sending resources immediately. Pano AI is expanding in Rancho Palos Verdes and is working with SDSU on the technology in San Diego.
