The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released a yearly study revealing the amount of agricultural land held by foreigners in 2022. The report, created under the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act of 1978, revealed that foreign persons held 43.4 million acres of American agricultural land, representing 3.4% of total privately owned agricultural land in America and 2% of the total land in America. The study also revealed an increase in foreign holdings of U.S. agricultural land by 3.4 million acres.
The report divided agricultural land into forest land, cropland, and pasture land, with 48% of foreign-held agricultural acres being forest land, 28% being cropland, and 21% being pasture land. The growth rate of foreign-held agricultural land has been significantly higher in recent years, with Canada, the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany holding the highest percentages. Chinese investors hold less than 1% of foreign-held agricultural land in the U.S.
