Brands that prioritize sustainability are under pressure to do away with single-use plastic as local and national governments across the globe clamp down. Single-use plastic products have been prohibited in Europe, Canada, and the UK since 2021, and more than 400 US municipalities have imposed taxes or bans on them. Because retailer demand and consumer behavior are driving sustainability targets, brands are under pressure to phase out plastic as soon as possible. Retailers’ concerns about falling short of their targets have caused category managers and product suppliers to take on more accountability.
